Overcoming Social Conditioning can mean the difference between life and death

By Liza Cooper | November 23, 2009

Overcoming social conditioning is one of the hurdles a woman or girl must overcome if she chooses to fight back. And that can mean the difference between life and death. There are powerful cultural norms that reward women and girls to “be nice,” not to “make a fuss,” to be passive. If you want to effectively protect yourself, you’ll have to ditch the niceties.

That means putting enough value upon yourself that you will value your right to safety over the possibility of doing harm to another. Carrying the mindset that your right to your life and bodily integrity is paramount will allow you to take whatever measures you need to survive.
